Tru is a song about Los Angeles social scenes. At times there is a plasticity, many seeking out constant opportunities versus genuine connection.
Welcome to the party jack
and you know that all the records and the sofas shit talkin’
The puppets pose like artifacts with their cigarettes
Your girls gloss tossed to the lamplight
smoke from your lips like snakes catching cases
The five dollars words that you spit to your silhouette
The mannequin crowd
Searches the ground for clues
Their plastic is loud
I turn from the sound to tell you
And you say tru.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
