about
Panopticon borrows from the metaphor of self policing. Often culture and its messages teach those to restrict and be hard on oneself. This song is about taking a stand against discourses and their influence. It is a radical act to love ones self.
lyrics
No one’s immune to its spotlight
They’re policing all of our dreams and soon leaving no room
Pidgeon holed til’ we can’t even take flight
Well I filed for appeal
To collectively heal through our love
Pick up the pieces and learn to feel
We’re spinning 45s up until the sun appears
But down the needle and grab the wheel
Reject the pressure that our culture wants us all to feel
Lock down the Panopticon’s eyesight
Shut down makes hard just to live our truth, I try to break thru
Our connections got to come forthright
Our communities weight
Well you can’t take away from that love
Pick up the pieces and learn to feel
We’re spinning 45s up until the sun appears
But down the needle and grab the wheel
Reject the pressure that our culture wants us all to feel

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
An ambitious pop song cycle about human loneliness and fear, thick with harmonies and buoyed by tight musicianship. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 27, 2018
Moodymann creates innovative soul funky music with deep 70s inspiration. The vocals are simply outstanding. A step back in time, 50 years ago! Superb. jef37
